Faret Tachikawa Art Restoration Committee is pleased to announce the open competition of a new outdoor artwork which to be permanently installed at the designated site in the town in addition to the 109 existing works of art by world's famous artists installed in 1994.
General Outline
 |
The urban redevelopment project gFaret Tachikawah was completed in October 1994 as a new noticed place of Tachikawa City, Tokyo. As a feature of the project, 109 outdoor permanent artworks by 92 leading artists from 36 countries were installed in this new business center. Those artworks reflect hundreds different aspects of the world have been enjoyed by the people who work, lean and visit the town. Art has been talking to people, giving people opportunities to find something new for their lives in this town.
After 11 years from its completion, many artworks of Faret Tachikawa are damaged by aging. In June 2005, gFaret Tachikawa Art Restoration Committeeh was formed by numbers of groups and individuals from the area. Actual restoration works started in following September, it is supposed to continue until March 2007 to restore as many damaged artworks as possible. The Committee also decided to invite a gNext Generation Arth, a new art No. 110 to be installed by the open competition to commemorate the restoration event.
Artwork proposals of any categories that fulfill the following conditions are welcomed. The grand prize winner will be awarded with prize to realize the work proposed.

Guidelines
ƒOrganizer„

ƒEligibility„
Any individual or collective group is eligible to apply, regardless age, sex and nationality.
ƒConditions of Artwork„
Proposal of artwork must be responding general concept of the original Faret Tachikawa Art Project, such as ethe town reflecting the world', eMaking function into fiction (art)' and eThe town of wonders and discovery'.
- Artwork must be original and unreleased (1 work per participant).
- Applicants should ensure that the work is technically appropriate and stable enough to be installed in the public domain.
- Artwork must be designed easy to maintain, durable for permanent installation.
- Artwork must be weather proof; cannot present a danger to the public; or produce an offensive sound and smell that would disturb visitors or members of the community.
- Artwork must not provide hidden spot or shelter for people.
- The execution of the installation on the chosen site should be carried out within 5 months (Including underground foundry work for objects installed when necessary)

ƒInstallation site„
The site designated in Tachikawa Central Park ¨ See Fig.1
ƒExplanation of the site and its surroundings„
- Tachikawa Central Park is an urban park which was developed within the gTachikawa redevelopment project on former U.S. military base siteh. Surrounding area of the park is expected to be a new commercial & service zone in the near future.
- The park is located at the north end of Toshi-Jiku (city axis) and can be seen from the pedestrian walkway of Tachikawa Station. The park is located at midpoint between Tachikawa Station and Takamatsu Station.
- The park is next to Higashi-Odori Street , it is the north entrance toward commercial & service zone.

- 5,000,000 YEN JP for Grand Prize for realization of the work (amount includes all the expenses such as fabrication, installation, transportation and any costs necessary for realization of the work).
- 100,000 YEN JP for Second prize winners (no realization of work)

ƒPeriod of application„
There are two procedures for application: applicantsf registration and proposal submission.
ƒHow to apply„
Application for the competition is in two procedures;
1)Applicants' registration and 2)Artwork proposal
ƒApplicants' registration„
Period: June 1 (Thu)- 30 (Fri), 2006.
- All applicants shall register with registration form below. Registration form can be accepted by post, fax or e-mail.
- Registration number will be sent back to the applicants by post, fax or e-mail.
- 1,000 YEN JP is required as registration fee.
Residents in Japan shall send 1,000 yen later with the proposal during gArtwork Proposal Periodh by ggenkin kakitomeh (registered postal mail for cash).
Residents outside Japan shall fill in the credit card information (Visa / Master) in the registration form.
- Contents of registration form will not affect the screening.
- Personal information of applicants will not intentionally be disclosed to any other parties.

ƒ Artwork proposal „
Period: July 17 (Mon)- 31(Mon), 2006
- Artwork proposal must arrive by 17:00 July 31, by post or international courier ONLY, NO carry-ins are accepted.
- Residents of Japan must send your proposal with 1,000 YEN JP registration fee (registered postal mail for cash).
- Proposal material must be complied on one A2 size board, which includes concept, architectural drawings etc.
- Proposal material should not be panelized or framed.
- We cannot accept material such as models and sculptures, but pictures of them can be included within the material.
- You should not write your name on your proposal material. Write your entry number at the right corner of the back side of it.
- Submitted proposal material will not be returned.

yInitial screeningz
- The Jury committee will assess the applications and proposals in August and select some plans.
The results will be announced on website and notified to those that pass the screening.

ySecond screeningz
- The Jury Committee will interview with those that pass the initial screening in late August in Tachikawa, Tokyo , and select one grand prize finalist.
- The results will be announced on website and notified to those that pass the screening.
- The grand prize winner must install the work at site based on proposal submitted within the due date.

ƒPreliminary installation site visit„
The preliminary installation site visit for registered applicants would be held on the following schedule;
@The first briefing: June 10, 2006 13:30 `
@The second briefing: July 8, 2006 13:30 `
*It does not affect the screening whether you attend it or not.
ƒHandling of Proposal Material„
- All the submitted proposal material will belong to the Committee after arrival. The committee has the right to handle the material from that time on.
- Copyright of the proposed artwork belongs to the artist.
- Proposal material may be used for promotional publication of the project (catalog, etc), website and press kit of for free.
The committee may also exhibit submitted proposals.

- Enquiry should be e-mailed or faxed by 30 June, 2006. Response to your questions will be on website in the middle of June to the middle of July.
